Job Specifics
Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the selected candidate has a broad range of responsibilities, which includes supporting park programs and various maintenance or operations tasks. This position works collaboratively with park management and staff in a variety of capacities. The duties of this position will include but are not limited to the following:
• Interact with the public, answer visitor questions, and resolves patron complaints.
• Engaging in horticultural activities, such as trail building and maintenance, landscaping, mowing, planting, weeding and operating handheld equipment.
• Performing maintenance activities, including beach, campground, winter park, and nature center operations.
• Performing grounds landscaping and building maintenance, using green practices and a variety of tools.
• Using motor driven equipment and hand tools in the performance of assigned tasks.
• Removing snow, ice or cleaning flooded areas.
• Conduct inspections of assigned areas for safety hazards and correct problems where possible and make requests for appropriate skilled trades assistance when needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Reassignment Qualifications:
Applicants must currently be in a Park Worker 3 position with OPRHP.
Non-Competitive Qualifications:
One year of experience* in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree**, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
Two years' experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, or recreational facility; OR two years' experience as a trade’s assistant under the supervision of a skilled trades-person, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school course.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.
**Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to operate light duty trucks and UTV’s.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons.
• Must have the ability to communicate in writing and to read and comprehend written material.
• Must possess experience with Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Must obtain chain saw qualifications within a year.
• Must obtain water treatment operator certification within a year.
• Must be available to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
